How to remove a password from a PDF

Banks, payroll and government portals love password-protected PDFs — and typing that password every single time gets old fast. If the file is yours and you know the password, you can remove the protection once and keep a normal PDF.

Honesty first: this unlocks PDFs whose password you know. It does not crack or bypass unknown passwords — no legitimate online tool does.

Step by step

  1. 1Open Unlock PDF. Drop the protected file on the Unlock PDF tool.
  2. 2Enter the current password. Type the password that currently opens the document — the same one the bank or sender gave you.
  3. 3Download the unlocked copy. The tool saves a decrypted copy with no password and no usage restrictions. The original stays untouched on your device.

Owner passwords vs open passwords

PDFs have two kinds of protection: an open password (required to view) and an owner password (blocks printing, copying or editing while viewing stays free). Unlocking removes both kinds of restriction from your copy, as long as you can open the file.

If a PDF only has owner restrictions — it opens fine but refuses to print — unlocking normalizes that too.

Keep it secure where it matters

Files upload over an encrypted connection, stay private to you, and are deleted automatically after 60 minutes. Still, the sensible rule for very sensitive documents is: unlock, download, and let the server copy expire.

Going the other way — adding strong protection — is the Protect PDF tool, which applies real AES-256 encryption.

Frequently asked questions

Can this remove a password I don’t know?
No. You need the current password to open the file; the tool then saves a copy without it. Cracking unknown passwords is neither offered nor possible here.
Is the unlocked file weaker or different?
It is the same document, simply stored without encryption. Nothing else changes.
Is it legal to remove a PDF password?
For your own documents, or files you are authorized to use — yes. Removing protection from documents you have no rights to is not.
