Which free PDF editors can edit existing text?

Adding a text box to a PDF is easy to find for free. Changing the words already on the page is not: several well-known tools keep that behind a paid plan, and the difference is rarely clear until you reach the upgrade prompt.

This comparison uses what each vendor says on its own website, checked on 4 November 2026. We read those pages rather than testing every product by hand, and PDFVelvet is our own tool, so check the vendor’s current page before you decide. Where a vendor does not say something clearly, the table says so.

Step by step

  1. 1Check whether you need to change existing words. If you only need to add a note, a signature or a text box, nearly every free editor will do. The rest of this comparison matters when the words already in the file are wrong.
  2. 2Check the file type. A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, so it has no text to edit. It needs text recognition first, and tools differ here: Sejda says it does not support changing text inside scans.
  3. 3Pick by the limit that affects you. Free tiers limit different things: tasks per hour, tasks per day, or file size. Choose the tool whose limit you are least likely to hit.
  4. 4Test with one page. Change one line, save the file and compare it with the original. Check that the font matches and the old words are gone before you rely on a tool for an important document.

Which one should you use?

For a quick fix in the browser with no account, PDFVelvet and Sejda are the two tools here that state clearly that they edit existing text for free. Sejda’s limit is 3 tasks per hour; PDFVelvet’s is a daily task limit with a smaller 15 MB file size, so Sejda may suit larger files better.

If you would rather install software, PDFgear’s desktop app says it can delete, add and modify text. If you already pay for Acrobat Pro or Smallpdf Pro, their editors do this too, and there is no need to switch.

Frequently asked questions

Why do so many free PDF editors only add text?
A PDF stores text as positioned characters, not as a flowing document. Changing a word means finding the text, removing it and fitting the replacement into the same space, which is more work than placing a new box on top.
Can I edit existing PDF text without converting to Word?
Yes. PDFVelvet and Sejda both change the text inside the PDF directly. Converting to Word and back also works, but it can shift the layout.
Do free editors add a watermark?
PDFVelvet never adds one. Vendors do not all state this on the pages we checked, so test one page before relying on a tool.
Can I edit text in a scanned PDF for free?
A scan has no text layer, so it needs text recognition first. PDFVelvet has that step built in; see our guide to editing text in a scanned PDF.
